- Lubin called Buterin Ethereum’s most important voice and leader today.
- Buterin’s novel explores governance, AI, and decentralized decision-making concepts.
- Lubin said fiction can help advance Ethereum’s long-term mission.
Some members of the Ethereum community have launched a barrage of criticism against the co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, and Joseph Lubin stands up for him, arguing that the latter is the most valuable voice and leader in the network. Despite his current project, a science fiction novel, creating a divide in the crypto community, Buterin remains a key figure in shaping the future of Ethereum, says Lubin. The Consensys chief executive pointed out that Buterin’s efforts in non-traditional software development should not be interpreted as a disruption to the network’s development.
The discussion picked up steam after the revelation that Buterin is working on a novel about decentralized government. He made the announcement on Farcaster and shared the first two chapters of the project on his own blog. Some had praised the endeavour, while others wondered if this should be the main priority at a challenging time for Ethereum. The worries have grown even louder in the wake of challenges in the market and restructuring in Ethereum’s organization. In recent months, the Ethereum Foundation lost some prominent investors and the price of ETH has failed to reach past cycle maximums.

Lubin Defends Buterin’s Broader Contribution to Ethereum
Lubin says that critics are missing the bigger picture of Buterin’s work. The Ethereum co-founder is an “enormously effective communicator,” he said, and that nobody contributes more to the long-term development of the ecosystem. Lubin suggested the novel is about concepts that are very relevant to Ethereum and decentralized systems. The imagined scenario explores governance systems, AI-facilitated decision making and even quadratic voting.
@VitalikButerin is an enormously effective communicator. And he is the most important contributor to and steward of the Ethereum ecosystem.

In addition, the project is said to point out issues with DAOs. This includes governance inefficiencies, coordination issues and financial imbalances that can occur in decentralized communities. Fiction offers a good lens through which to look at these issues, Lubin said. Issues of governance can be made more accessible to a wider audience using stories. He also struck back at claims that Buterin’s literary work is a sign of his departure from Ethereum. The project, instead, is “a further expression of the co-founder’s vision around decentralization and digital coordination,” Lubin said.
Ethereum’s Long-Term Vision Remains Unchanged
Lubin highlighted that, in addition to the novel, Ethereum is on a mission. He said there was a need for a neutral platform that can facilitate international cooperation, digital assets and open participation. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of principles like privacy, censorship resistance, and open-source development for the Ethereum ecosystem. The Ethereum Foundation is just as well-placed to defend those values, says Lubin.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the future of Ethereum. But nevertheless, Lubin has emphatically stated his continued support of Buterin as the “the dominant voice” and one of the most influential voices in the ecosystem. With an open embrace of Lubin’s most recent initiative, Buterin took the lead and diverted attention away from criticism. He said that the Ethereum co-founder’s efforts, both technical and creative, are still contributing to the ongoing long-term vision and development of the network.
