The group launched in January with broad authority to shrink agencies and redirect resources. It entered major departments across Washington and pushed for quick changes. Many offices saw cuts, structural shifts, and new reporting demands. The team presented those steps as proof of its mission. Critics argued that the real impact remained unclear.
It has also been confirmed that DOGE no longer has a formal office role. The role of DOGE has been taken over by the federal human resources agency. This has been seen from internal documents that showed the work being taken over by various units in recent months.
Trump–Musk Rift Marked the Beginning of DOGE’s End
Elon Musk played a part in the early development of the identity of DOGE. He often posted about its aims and had large plans to cut the size of the government. His postings attracted millions and elicited unexpected interest in the federal office of efficiency. His staff also took part in the public campaign about the initiative.
All appearances at political gatherings gave the impression that DOGE offered something fresh in Washington. The government spread the message through their various announcements and expressions of support across the cabinet levels.
DOGE reportedly showed drastic reductions in their expenses, but the extent of which could not be verified by analysts who were not part of the government. The unit failed to provide information about the expenses. This marked the beginning of the controversies surrounding their performance.
The political alliance of Trump and Musk would soon fall apart. Musk cut his ties to the nation’s capital and focused his efforts elsewhere. The government had already begun to refer to DOGE in the past tense, which meant the end had already begun.
Former DOGE Team Members Take New Federal Roles
A number of the DOGE personnel members have taken up new roles. Some of them joined a group that focuses on design and the development of government websites. Other personnel members took up senior technological and research roles in large government departments. The roles also encompass innovation, health systems, defense research, and foreign assistance.
The government presses forward with regulatory reductions and the development of AI tools. Their work shows that the original group continues to shape government operations even without using the DOGE name.
