Ethereum developers have launched a new platform to address future risks from quantum computing. The initiative focuses on protecting the network and its assets. It also outlines long-term plans to strengthen Ethereum against advanced cryptographic threats.

The platform, called “Post-Quantum Ethereum,” went live on Tuesday. It was introduced by members linked to the Ethereum Foundation. The project includes a dedicated Post-Quantum team working on protocol-level upgrades.

The team plans to integrate quantum-resistant solutions into Ethereum by 2029. These changes will first target the protocol layer. Updates to the execution layer will follow after that phase is complete.

Ethereum Flags Future Quantum Risks

Developers said there is no immediate quantum threat to blockchain systems. However, they warned that preparation must start early. Large-scale upgrades require long timelines and careful coordination.

The team also stated that because of Ethereum’s global nature, it is more complicated. It needs to be tested, verified, and deployed. Delays in planning might lead to risks in the future.

The risks posed by quantum computing have been on the rise in the crypto world. The risks are, however, a subject of controversy among different experts. Some believe that only public keys are at risk. 

However, others have also argued that all crypto assets could be threatened in the future. This has led to an emphasis on wallet security. It has also prompted the development community to look for new solutions.

Cryptographic signatures are also an area that has received attention. Some quantum-safe signatures need increased computing power. This could have implications for storage and network bandwidth.

SNARK-Based Signatures Lead Ethereum Upgrade Plan

To address this, the team is working with SNARK-based signatures. This method uses zero-knowledge proof technology. It aims to improve security without harming performance.

There are plans to upgrade various layers of the Ethereum network. This includes the consensus layer, the execution layer, and the data layer.

First, the developers will work on the standard user wallets. This category holds a large percentage of the network’s value. After this, the high-value wallets connected to exchanges and other services will be addressed.

According to the developers, the upgrade will be a complicated procedure. This is because millions of accounts need to be updated. At the same time, the update should not introduce new bugs and attack vectors.

There is a need to maintain the performance of the network. Coordination across the ecosystem will be critical. This upgrade will require long-term collaboration.
