Stripe has launched a new feature that allows AI agents to pay directly using USDC on Base through the x402 protocol. The update targets developers and businesses that work with autonomous systems. The company said the system lowers friction and removes the need for human involvement.
Stripe’s Product Lead Jeff Weinstein announced the feature on X. He said AI agents can now handle payments for APIs or services on their own. He noted that the update introduces machine-level infrastructure built for automated activity.
Developers can integrate the system with only a few lines of code. Stripe said the process is simple and fast. The new x402 payment design addresses limits found in traditional financial systems.

How x402 Machine Payments Work
Weinstein stated that agents need microtransactions and continuous global access. He also said they require low latency and finality guarantees. He added that the existing financial system serves human workflows, not automated agents.
Businesses can accept payments from AI agents through Stripe’s PaymentIntents system. They can set unique rates for agent-driven transactions. They can also manage regular subscriptions and invoices without making major changes.
The process begins with creating a PaymentIntents API call. Stripe then generates a unique deposit address tied to that specific payment. Developers give this address to the AI agent and instruct it to send USDC or a payment token.

Developers can track the payment through the API, a webhook, or the Stripe Dashboard. Once confirmed, the funds move to the merchant’s usual balance. Stripe said the system currently supports USDC on Base through the x402 protocol.
New Tools Boost Stripe’s Machine Payment Ecosystem
The company plans to add support for more protocols, chains, and currencies. Weinstein said the system keeps refunds and tax handling consistent. He also said users only need to engage with crypto details if they choose to do so.
Stripe released an open-source CLI named purl. It lets developers and bots test machine payments in the terminal. The company also provided sample scripts for Node and Python.
Weinstein indicated that Stripe is gearing up for a world in which agents, humans, and businesses will be able to make transactions with one another. He added that the increasing number of agents necessitates efficient payment systems.
Stripe recently added support for additional stablecoins in December. The company allows merchants to accept USDC on Ethereum, Base, and Polygon with USD settlement. The addition of USDC integrates with Stripe’s Optimized Checkout Suite.
GoPlus Security tested over 30 x402 projects. The company found high-risk issues in token tools and cross-chain tools. The x402 model revived the old HTTP 402 payment concept for automated payment capabilities. The company indicated that caution is still necessary despite increasing adoption.
