In 2026, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin plans to transition to decentralized social media platforms fully. This action aligns with his dream of transforming society through communication. Buterin suggests that the most significant formula for a better society is to work on making mass communication more useful, bringing the best information to the surface, enabling people to find common ground, and acting in the long-term interests of users rather than maximizing short-term interaction.
The Need for More Competition in Social Media
According to Butterin, the existing social media ecosystem, dominated by centralized platforms, needs more competition. He is of the view that decentralization might be the solution to better interaction among people on the internet. His recent experience highlights this change. However, Butterin has been working on Firefly. Social is a multi-client platform that integrates multiple decentralized social media applications, including X, Lens, Farcaster, and Bluesky. This tool allows one to write and read content on these platforms without a centralized system.

Buterin also criticizes crypto-centric social projects, many of which have failed due to excessive reliance on speculative tokens. According to him, forming a price bubble for creators has been an unsuccessful practice.
He points out that crypto projects are supposed to be centered on the social component of decentralized platforms, which is often overlooked as projects shift towards seeking monetary gains. Substack, in particular, has demonstrated that content creators can prosper in an economy that does not rely on speculative bubbles to support their work.
Nevertheless, despite failures in the decentralized social space, Buterin is optimistic. He praises the work of the Aave team in managing Lens, a decentralized social platform, and hopes the project will have a future. According to him, the new squad replacing Lens will bring new thinking and renewed interest in solving the problems of social interaction on the decentralized web.

The following year will mark a breakthrough for decentralized social platforms. The dynamics of online communication can change as more people seek alternatives to traditional social networks. The decentralized space is still developing, but the trend towards establishing open, transparent communication channels is gaining momentum.
