  • Bhutan’s Bitcoin reserve has reached $1.3 billion, close to 40% of its GDP.
  • The country began mining in 2020 using its hydropower resources.
  • Bhutan now holds the third-largest Bitcoin reserve among national governments.

In 2020, Bhutan took its first steps into the crypto world. At the time, the country was closed off due to the pandemic. Behind the scenes, a small group began building what would become a major Bitcoin reserve. Today, that reserve is worth $1.3 billion, nearly 40% of Bhutan’s GDP.

Bhutan took a step using one of the most abundant resources: hydropower. Electricity in its rivers provides a cheap way to mine bitcoin. The project started with two computers in a small office. When the machine heated the room and even activated security alarms. But the team did not stop. They learned, expanded, and established four national mining sites by 2022.

Bhutan Gains Dollars Through Mining

Most of Bhutan’s mining projects remained hidden from the public. Even many citizens did not know until recently. The government has never disclosed how many mines operate. He kept calm to avoid interruptions and focused on the result.

To serve the project, Bhutan produced a company called Green Digital. The company received assistance from Bitdeer Technologies in Singapore. Bitdeer produced two additional mines and paid for electricity in US dollars. This helped Bhutan increase foreign currency reserves.

The selected team is cool with mining for electrical wires in mountainous regions near the lines. These conditions lower the cost of cooling and reduce its efficiency. According to satellite data, Bhutan now has at least six active mines. Officials confirm that the project follows all regulations, even when some requests require more public transparency.

Bhutan Expands Crypto Use Nationwide

Bhutan doesn’t stop with Bitcoin stones. The government has decided to keep the election campaign for a long period. Although no new mines are planned, the improvement is in progress. Bhutan has also started interacting with Crypto in everyday life. In May, the country introduced the Crypto Payment System for Tourism.

Visitors can now pay for flights, hotels, and visa fees using more than 100 types of digital resources. It has also connected Crypto to its urban future. In Gelefu, the mindfulness city, crypto will play an important role in services, trade, and lifestyle. The approach of Bhutan is different from others.

The country didn’t create a buzz when it was building its Bitcoin BTC infrastructure. It moved silently and had a proper strategy and utilized local resources. Now Bhutan is holding the 3rd largest Bitcoin BTC among nations, proving that not only big countries do big things, but small countries can also lead things in a way that inspires other nations.
