The Bhutan National Digital Identity (NDI) system is currently being scaled up to improve the security of the blockchain infrastructure by switching Polygon to Ethereum. The move, to be fully implemented by the first quarter of 2026, is a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s blockchain development and online security.
Launched in 2024 as a collaboration with Polygon, the NDI platform of Bhutan enables 800,000 citizens to store and share their digital credentials, allowing them to access online services securely.
The choice of migrating to Ethereum is based on the intention to make the platform more efficient in terms of security, as Ethereum provides more functionalities that can be used to manage national digital identities.

Jigme Tenzing, the Secretary of the Bhutan GovTech Agency, emphasized that the security framework of Ethereum offers greater protection for digital identities, which supports the country’s purpose of keeping its citizens’ information safe in the growing digital world.

Moving Towards a Secure Blockchain Future
The Ethereum migration process is not just about enhancing security, but also about establishing Bhutan as a leader in the international blockchain arena. The first country to base its national system of digital identity on Ethereum is Bhutan. As Aya Miyaguchi, President of the Ethereum Foundation, notes, this can mark a significant shift in the world towards an open and secure digital future.
The event was also attended by Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, which only serves to underscore the event’s importance.
Besides its digital identity development, Bhutan has also been mining Bitcoin over the past few years to enhance its cryptocurrency reserves. The nation has also become the sixth-largest governmental holder of bitcoin internationally, possessing 6,371 BTC, despite the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates holding the top 5 positions.
The move is another step in Bhutan’s broader plan to leverage blockchain technology to propel its digital economy, thereby preparing it for a more secure and innovative future.
