Her work bridges the gap between technology and everyday understanding in the world of cryptocurrency.
  • Hackers are now using deepfake video calls to impersonate trusted contacts and spread malware.
  • A North Korea-linked group deceived a crypto employee using AI-generated visuals in repeated Zoom meetings.
  • Changpeng Zhao warns that video call verification may soon become ineffective due to rising deepfake threats.

Changpeng Zhao, former CEO of Binance, has issued a strong warning about artificial intelligence being used in advanced cyberattacks. Zhao proclaimed that deep fake video technology is indeed creating a hazard to identity verification on video calls.

He mentioned that video calls are not to be believed anymore because hackers are introducing convincing AI-made impressions. In the case of internet interactions, Zhao also advised users not to download software using unofficial URLs.

This warning was given soon after a troubling claim by one of the Japanese crypto influencers, Mai Fujimoto. In her post on X, she explains that after participating in a Zoom meeting with a deepfake of one of her acquaintances, someone hacked her account.

According to Fujimoto, she could not properly hear an audio message and ended up falling into a trap by clicking a link provided by the impersonator. That link worked with malicious software, resulting in the full compromise of her Telegram and MetaMask accounts.

She learned later that her acquaintance had already been hacked before the call in Telegram. This allowed sending the deepfake and tricking her into downloading the malicious application.

This is one of the tactics increasingly employed by cyber criminals to take advantage of trust and familiarity. By integrating deepfake images and social engineering, or the ability to manipulate subjects through emotions and unconvincing persuasions, the attacker can trick the victim better.

North Korean-Linked Hackers Deploy Similar Tactics in Crypto Sector

There was another case of BlueNoroff, a group that was likely associated with North Korea. It was stated that the group deployed the same deepfake process to attack a worker in a cryptocurrency foundation.

The attacker also participated in a few Zoom calls with the victim and appeared in the video call using AI videos of the company’s top management. After simulated microphone malfunctions, the hacker persuaded the victim to install an extension present in the browser.

Installed through the extension, the malware deployed a keylogger, screen capture, and data stealer that intercepted credentials to crypto wallets. This technique permitted the hackers to gain confidential details with time.

Security analysts have affirmed that this type of attack is increasingly becoming a topic of concern in any digital asset terrain. In particular, they caution that the crypto sector has trouble-free work-at-home employees who are inclined to be high-value targets.

Trust indicators are becoming unreliable due to the impact of deepfake technology. Even video presence has stopped guaranteeing identity, combined as they are with already affected communication accounts.

These events indicate that the threat environment of the crypto sphere is developing. As machine-driven deception enters the field, it is advised to review digital communication rituals and reinforce methods to verify such deception.
