  • BNB donation from Binance’s CZ aids Myanmar and Thailand in earthquake recovery.
  • Zhao’s donation highlights the growing use of cryptocurrency for fast disaster relief.
  • Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand leaves 144 dead, with rescue efforts ongoing.

Binance’s co-founder, Changpeng “CZ,” has donated 500 BNB to assist both Myanmar and Thailand in recovering from the earthquake that occurred on March 28, 2025. The funds received from Zhao will be channeled through Binance as well as Binance Thailand for disaster relief in both countries.

“I hope everyone is safe in Thailand,” stated the Binance founder on X before affirming a donation to both countries affected by the earthquake.

Disaster Strikes Myanmar

He also hoped that all the people who were affected by the calamity would be saved. His message came after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region at about 1:20 pm local time. The earthquake’s epicenter was approximately 10 miles away from Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar.

The earthquake affected both countries and left the infrastructure in a bad state, many buildings and regions were flooded. According to The Guardian, the death toll has been identified as at least 144. The death toll is likely to increase as the rescue teams keep on with the operation on a 24/7 basis.

Moreover, 732 people have been reported to have sustained injuries from the disaster. The situation is equally bad as rescue teams struggle to take survivors who may still be trapped in the debris alive.

Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has sought foreign assistance. He appealed to other countries to provide any form of aid that they can in their disaster relief operations. Thailand has also been trying to mitigate and coordinate the impacts and losses in the affected zones.

BNB Drives Crypto Donations

Zhao’s donation brought into the spotlight, the increasing interest of the general public in helping disaster victims using cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies such as BNB are now viewed as practical methods of achieving the goal of rapidly and efficiently delivering aid. Cryptocurrency transactions are relatively cheaper and are settled within a short period of time, making it easier and faster when moving funds across borders.

It is pertinent to note that crypto has previously been effectively applied as a mechanism to support disaster relief efforts. Following the disastrous 2023 earthquake in Turkey and Syria, Haluk Levent began to collect cryptocurrencies. The Giving Block, a fundraising platform for cryptocurrency donations, managed to raise over one million dollars for the Maui wildfires in 2023. It also made a hefty contribution to the California wildfires that occurred earlier this year.
