Cloudflare has partnered with Coinbase to launch the x402 Foundation, an initiative designed to transform machine-to-machine payments. The x402 protocol aims to streamline transactions between digital services. It offers a standardized method of value exchange without the use of accounts and subscriptions, ensuring the process becomes seamless and automated.
Existing web payment systems are human-oriented. They entail activities such as keying in credit card details to buy something. Nevertheless, with the advent of bots and online services, direct machine-to-machine payments are necessary. The x402 protocol covers this gap. It enables machines to communicate and trade with each other easily.

One of the biggest problems that x402 will address is the absence of a common response to payment requests. Most sites give the bots the HTTP 402 Payment Required error. However, when there is no clear protocol, such requests are usually left unresolved. x402 can change this by giving developers a standardized approach to dealing with such transactions.

The x402 process is simple. When a request is made for a resource, the server replies with a 402 Payment Required status containing payment details. The client then approves the payment, which is verified, and the transaction is carried out by the payment facilitator.
