  • Coinbase introduces Payments MCP, the first tool connecting AI agents to crypto wallets and onchain payments.
  • The release allows large language models to transact, manage funds, and pay for services directly via natural language.
  • It marks a major step toward agentic commerce, where AI agents can act in real-world economies.

According to the report, Coinbase has launched Payments MCP, a new system that links large language models such as Claude, Gemini, and Codex to on-chain wallets and payments. The initiative allows these AI systems to interact directly with the crypto economy. It removes the need for complex developer setups or API keys.

This release precedes a major event involving the upcoming launch of the x402 Foundation, a project initiated by Coinbase and Cloudflare that aims to create agentic systems with a secure standard. Payments MCP extends this initiative, giving AI capabilities that exist in human digital finance.

Agents are now able to manage wallets, make use of stablecoins, as well as carry out transactions on their own, with just natural language commands. It’s a goal of Coinbase to make sure that every digital agent will be able to carry out financial transactions safely and transparently.

AI Agents Can Create Wallets Using Just an Email Address

Payments MCP was developed by the Coinbase Developer Platform. It offers a range of tools that will make it easier for any individual or AI to participate onchain. Users or AI will be able to sign in or create a wallet with just an email address. Additionally, they will be able to control expenses with a simple interface.

It comes with the integration of the x402 Bazaar Explorer, which allows the agents to find APIs and services that they are able to directly pay for. Additionally, it supports instant transacting.

The system has been successfully tested with a variety of AI models such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, and Cherry Studio. This will make it one of the most compatible gateways for AI models for cryptocurrencies, at least for now. Other models will also be supported shortly.

Coinbase Bridges AI and DeFi Through Payments MCP

Payments MCP remains a straightforward concept that AI needs to perform, not just analyze. With Payments MCP, agents will be capable of autonomous payment for compute, access to paywalled data, or tipping content creators. They will also handle simple business operations such as payments or billing.

Stablecoins are at the heart of this business model. They function at the speed of code, provide worldwide accessibility, and overcome friction that comes with payments. It’s through linking LLMs to this platform that Coinbase connects AI with finance that is decentralized in nature.

With safety features integrated, users benefit from control over permissions as they engage with autonomous transactions. Payments MCP marks a new beginning for a new level of economy, with intelligent systems operating alongside humans.
