While thousands of crypto professionals are coming to Cannes for EthCC 2025, a concerning pattern is beginning to show its effects. Many violent attacks against well-known figures in the crypto world in France have prompted the city’s authorities to implement safety measures used at the local film festival.
From June 30 to July 3, several top figures, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, will present their ideas at EthCC. Since the conference draws a lot of attention and threats are growing, police and security agencies are significantly present in the area. The French authorities are using emergency procedures to shield the event participants from potential attacks by criminals.
At least six acts of violence have been reported against crypto moguls or their relatives in the past several months. Jameson Lopp, a cybersecurity expert, has recorded these cases and noticed they follow a concerning pattern of kidnappings and attacks. It appears that all these attacks are planned and put into effect by organized crime looking for digital assets.
One of the cruelest cases was when David Balland, one of the founders of Ledger, and his wife were both taken prisoner. While held by kidnappers for 36 hours, Balland lost a finger after one of his captors cut it off with a knife. Law enforcement later intervened and rescued him. Another case in Paris involved someone’s father being abducted and held for ransom by people demanding Bitcoin.
EthCC Organizers and Authorities Launch Major Security Operation
Consequently, EthCC is working with the French security authorities to secure the event. Cannes, which is always protected by over 500 CCTV cameras, will receive additional security from other nearby cities. To ensure safety, authorities are involving more police in the area until the festival is over.
According to Jerome de Tychey, one of the creators of EthCC, the organizers are cooperating closely with authorities. Units surround stadiums and areas, and people who need them can use the emergency hotlines and have their homes checked before the event. They are included in the concerted effort to provide safety for everyone during the conference.
In March, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleu formed a task force to address organized crime in the financial sector. This step is taken because France is now seen as a good place for blockchain companies thanks to its favorable rules. Nevertheless, the industry’s size has caught the eye of criminals who want to exploit it.
The recent wave of violence has made security a top priority for EthCC 2025. Since France is spearheading Europe’s entry into crypto, guarding the safety of blockchain leaders is paramount. Officials hope their measures will help the conference pass without any trouble.
