According to the report, Ilya Lichtenstein has secured an early release from a US prison. He previously received a five-year sentence in November 2024. Authorities convicted him of laundering nearly one hundred and twenty thousand Bitcoin stolen from the Bitfinex exchange.
This act took place back in 2016, and it shocked the cryptocurrency world. At the time the assets were recovered, they were valued at four point five billion dollars. US officials arrested Lichtenstein in February 2022. His wife and conspirator, Heather Morgan, was detained as well.
Authorities accuse the two of trying to relocate and conceal the stolen Bitcoins. However, investigators later recovered most of the stolen digital money. The case is one of the largest financial confiscations in the US.
Federal Reform Law Cuts Lichtenstein’s Jail Time
Lichtenstein completed prison programs and work assignments. These actions diminished his prison term. His release adhered to the guidelines outlined in a federal reform bill enacted several years prior. The First Step Act was enacted in 2018 during Donald Trump’s presidential term.
This was aimed at fighting repeat crime and overcrowding in prisons. This act pays offenders for undertaking education and vocational, and rehabilitation programs. Offenders earn credits that help them finish their sentences.
This law was responsible for Lichtenstein’s freedom, according to Lichtenstein. There is evidence showing Lichtenstein meets the terms of the program. Officials were pleased with his conduct and participation. This is evident through the impact of this law on white-collar and digital asset offenses.
It is not an isolated case. There are other people from the crypto market who received less harsh sentencing. There is currently an increasing debate on sentencing and reform in the digital financial market.
Bitfinex Hack Case Keeps Public Attention
The case also gained public attention. Heather Morgan became an online personality with the pseudonym Razzlekhan. Her videos and postings on the Web gained popularity after the arrest took place. She continued writing songs until authorities jailed her in January 2025.
Morgan received an eighteen-month sentence. She was released from prison in October after serving eight months. Since her release, Morgan has come back to the limelight. Lichtenstein did not follow suit.
He took accountability for the hack and apologized for it. He also cooperated with US law enforcement on other crypto-related investigations. In March 2024, he gave testimony during the trial of the suspected operator of Bitcoin Fog. The jury later found the suspect guilty and sentenced him.
Lichtenstein is now free and plans on using his skills in the field of cybersecurity. His goal is to utilize his skills in technology in a positive manner. His story has found its way into the mainstream debate about crime and reform in the crypto economy.
