- Pi Network completed Protocol 22 with full sync and no reported transaction failures.
- Protocol 22 strengthens Pi Network node sync, security, speed, and stability.
- Pi Network prepares Protocol 23 for smart contracts after its Mainnet upgrade.
Pi Network has completed its Mainnet upgrade to Protocol 22, marking a key technical step for the blockchain project. The Pi Core Team confirmed the move on X and told node runners to prepare for the next Protocol 23 release.
The upgrade followed a hard deadline of April 27, 2026. All Mainnet nodes had to move to Protocol 22.1 before that date. Nodes that failed to meet the rule were disconnected from the network. The action was aimed at keeping the Mainnet aligned under one protocol version.
Network Update: The Pi Mainnet has successfully upgraded to Protocol 22!

Node operators, please ensure your systems are up to date and stay tuned for instructions regarding the upcoming v23 upgrade.
Block explorer data showed a stable result after the upgrade. The network was fully synchronized and showed no transaction failures. This outcome pointed to a smooth process by the Pi Core Team. It also showed the role of node operators in keeping the network active.
Pi Network Advances With Protocol 22 Upgrade
Protocol 22 is the second major upgrade in Pi Network’s current roadmap. It is based on an upgraded Stellar Core framework. The protocol focuses on scalability, security, transaction speed, and network stability. These areas are central to Pi Network’s plan to support more complex blockchain activity.
The upgrade also improves node synchronization across the network. Better synchronization can help nodes stay aligned during Mainnet operations. Protocol 22 adds dual interface support for node runners. Operators can now manage activity from the node screen and the Pi Desktop app.
The change gives operators more control over their systems. It also supports future infrastructure work inside the Pi ecosystem. The upgrade is viewed as a bridge to Protocol 23. That next release was announced for May 11, 2026.

Protocol 23 is expected to introduce full smart contract functionality on the Pi Mainnet. This would allow more advanced applications to run on the network. The formation of PiRC1 is also linked to Protocol 22. PiRC1 is a potential standard of issuing tokens in the ecosystem.
Protocol Roadmap Supports Pi Mainnet Growth
Under that standard, applications must show real consumer demand before issuing tokens. They should also possess products of working nature prior to release. In February 2025, the Pi Network went into its open Mainnet stage. It has since undergone a series of technical upgrades.
Previous updates added Protocol 20.2 in March and Protocol 21.2 in April. The releases made the network ready for the finished Protocol 22 upgrade. Further upgrades will follow Protocol 23. Protocol 26 in June also provides updates to the roadmap.
By early May 2026, approximately 10 billion PI had moved to the Mainnet. Verified pioneers will also receive second migrations and referral bonuses. The network has over 421,000 active nodes. It also employs over 1 million CPUs.
Pi Network is reported to have 18 million KYC-verified users. The operators of the nodes still play an important part in the decentralized framework of the project.
Mainnet is also increasing in terms of ecosystem activity. Pi App Studio applications are live, and KYC validator payouts and decentralized AI pilot programs are in progress.
