Ethereum’s direction for the long-term has been shrouded in uncertainty since the Ethereum Foundation announced an additional shakeup of the leadership of its core Protocol division. As Ethereum developers keep developing significant scaling solutions, security enhancements, and user experience expansion throughout the network, the changes are scheduled to roll out.

Key Ethereum Developers Exit During Major Restructuring
A number of key players are getting ready to step down from key roles within the company. Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko will be departing the Ethereum Foundation, whilst Alex Stokes is leaving for a while as part of a sabbatical. As a result, there was a broader discussion in the Ethereum community about the continuity of development and what to work on next.
Ethereum Foundation CEO Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn and Fredrik will take over from the previous co-leads in the Protocol division, according to the Ethereum Foundation. The three developers are not new at the company; they were all active participants in various development teams before being given greater leadership roles, the organization said.
Fredrik is currently the head of protocol security research at Ethereum, including security research on its Trillion Dollar initiative. In the meantime, Wedderburn leads the development of zkEVM and Corcoran is making significant contributions to the post-quantum security and research fields.
In addition to the leadership changes, the Ethereum Foundation is under increasing focus from the public after a series of high-profile exits over the past few months. Josh Stark, who recently became co-executive director, and Tomasz K. Stańczak have both left the organization in recent months. Also, a number of developers from the Ethereum Foundation joined competing crypto projects ahead of the move.
Ethereum Development Priorities Continue Shifting
The uncertainty of restructuring did not deter the Ethereum Protocol division as they are still responsible for a number of important network upgrades currently being developed. The team is responsible for the base protocol of Ethereum, coordination of L2 scaling solutions, security systems, research of cryptography and user experience enhancements.
The development is mostly still centered on the soon to be Glamsterdam upgrade. The upgrade is expected to increase the gas limit floor on Ethereum to 200 million, and add Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation functionality according to the Ethereum Foundation.
Furthermore, the organization is still working on research with future Hegotá upgrade. That initiative aims to roll out FOCIL prototypes that will enhance Ethereum’s censorship resistance systems throughout the network.
Internal Changes Increase Community Scrutiny
Concurrently, the transition to a new leader of the Ethereum is a part of a wider internal transformation phase. The criticism grew louder earlier this year when it was rumored that employees were being required to sign loyalty agreements.
In the meantime, Monnot said that he had focused on a gradual evolution of the priorities and got gradually involved in the product-oriented development and better user experience. His X post reads that enhancing the usability of Ethereum in practice is a huge focus for him going forward.
Even though there have been leadership changes, the network’s most crucial technical changes are kept under the control of the Protocol division of Ethereum. This means that the success or failure of future scaling and security projects could have a significant impact on Ethereum’s competitiveness in the broader blockchain ecosystem.
